Frequently Asked Questions

What are your readings like?

Insightful, empowering, and fun!  I work with you to tell your "story" through the cards or tea leaves.  We'll explore your questions, gain different perspectives, interact with the images, laugh, cry, and generally have a good time!

I encourage you to take notes during your reading, and I am happy to send a photo of your cards or tea leaves for your personal reference.  If your reading is done via Zoom, I can record the session, upload it to a secure site, and send you a private link by email.  (Uploaded sessions are left up for only a short time.  If you need longer, please let me know.)

Will you predict my future with the Tarot?

I don't practice predictive reading or "fortune-telling".  In my view, the cards don't actually predict the future; they show us possibilities.  We get to decide which ones to follow.  Think of a reading as being like the local weather report: the short term forecast can be reasonably expected if things continue as they are, while longer range forecasts are subject to change.

What if I get a "bad" card, like Death or The Devil?

At first, the Tarot may appear mysterious, so it's sometimes greeted with suspicion.  Some people claim the cards exert a negative influence over people.  That's a little misguided, because after all, they're just cards.  Honestly, a credit card is more likely to have a negative impact on you than a Tarot card!

The Tarot images are metaphors that aren't meant to be taken literally.  For example, drawing the Death card doesn't mean a death sentence.  It's the idea of the kind of transformation that death represents: something old ends so that something new can begin.  Like seasons changing, winter gives way to spring.   In the same way, having the Devil appear in a reading doesn't mean the prince of darkness is popping by for a visit.  It's actually symbolic of the temptations of material possessions and self-destructive behaviors.  In other words, the only demons found here are the ones that we wrestle with inside.

Today, it's quite common for mental health professionals to use Tarot with patients for its therapeutic value. The cards are helpful, not harmful.  In fact, the Tarot and our standard deck of playing cards have the same origin - and to my knowledge, no one has ever summoned up a demon by playing solitaire.

What kinds of questions can I ask?

Clients ask all kinds of questions (including that one!).  They range from love and relationships to career choices and vacation plans.  I do recommend having a specific question in mind before we begin, because it may determine the type of card spread we use.  Open-ended questions work best; questions with a yes/no answer may be quick and to-the-point, but they don't offer much in the way of detail.

Just remember that the cards help you find the answer you already have inside.  So I won't be telling you what to do, playing matchmaker for anyone, or giving you the winning lottery numbers!
